I'm not entirely sure how to start this entry so I'll just jump right in . . . Again, I'm discussing scenes from Star Ocean: The Last Hope, and, like all of the major animated scenes, the one leading to Earth's destruction is quite pivotal, not only to the overall story of the game but to Edge's character  development.

On the alternate Earth in the past (year 1957), Edge and his crew are trying to rescue Reimi from the research facility. By the time they reach the main hangar bay, where the Calnus is now hidden, they are greeted by enough armed goons and the director of the research facility, Milla Bachtein. She uses emotional manipulation in order to gain what she wants from Edge, which is the crystal that powers the Calnus's warp drive. By this point, Edge has chosen to not fight in order to reach Reimi, and I believe he's made the only good choice available to him.

Understand, Edge doesn't realize what a good decision he's made by the time they've escaped the alternate Earth's destruction. He's blaming himself for the inevitable destruction. Yes, it's a poor decision on his part. He gives Milla Bachtein the crystal, which she places in a machine that brings about the destruction of Earth. The one angle he isn't looking at what would have happened if he'd refused to give her the crystal.

So what would have happened if Edge had refused to give Milla Bachtein the crystal? Well, Edge would have died right from the beginning. Remember, Milla had soldiers at her command. All she'd have to do is give the signal for her soldiers to fire. Edge doesn't wear a helm of any kind so his head is unprotected. A single shot to the forehead would end his life. Several shots could take out Bacchus after a while, and the crystal would end up Milla's hands anyway. Earth would have been destroyed anyway, taking Faize, Lymle, Meracle, and Reimi with it, and the Grigori would have destroyed the universe. As painful as his original decision turned out to be in the end for him, Edge truly did make the right call.
No fanfic today. I'm going to let people contemplate today's topic. :)
